B22 in team with DBA Progetti is awarded the 3rd prize in the international competition for a new sailing center to be realized in one of the former compounds of the Asinara island high-security prison.
The Island of Asinara (the "donkeys island") was entirely used as a high security prison till the end of the 90s. Considered together with the Pianosa island the italian Alcatraz, the prison was made of several compounds, each hosting prisoners convicted for different offenses.
During the Years of Lead, and following the bombs of the early 90s, some branches and, in one specific case, an entire compound were dedicated to host individuals convicted for serious offences.
The importance of the Island in the recent history of Italy, together with the beautiness of the incredibly untouched landscape, was a unique opportunity to design a refurbishment project of one of the compounds, Trabuccato, in the frame of a competition organized by the Coastal Conservation Agency of the Sardinia region.
Villaggio Expo is on its way! Excavations have been completed and foundations and underground levels are being poured during the summer. Last week a crane has been assembled on the plot of T11, the building designed by B22.
